SITES Goes Home Gardening

If you serve any eco-minded gardeners, then you might want to tune into the newest development to branch off the Sustainable Site Initiative (SITES). The U.S. Botanic Garden and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center have sponsored a website and initiative to help home gardeners create more sustainable landscapes. Called Landscape For Life, they say the recommendations are based on the principles of the Sustainable Sites Initiative, the nation’s first rating system for sustainable landscapes.

Their website,, provides workbooks; questionnaires for hiring landscapers; and checklists for home sites, new gardens and garden renovations. They also offer a strong argument for the benefits landscapes can provide in terms of air quality, water, wildlife, soil control and human wellbeing. On the information pages, you’ll find that they highlight the differences between “conventional gardens” and “sustainable gardens” in regards to soil, water, plants, inputs, and human health.
